STYLES OF YOGAiStock_000003378772XSmall

To help you decide which class to start with, here's a brief description of the styles of yoga we offer at AFB. When you're starting out it's a good idea to mix it up, some styles and teachers will appeal more than others.

HATHA: The original and some say the best, Hatha Yoga combines yoga postures or asanas with breath awareness and relaxation to provide a great foundation for your practice and your health. Hatha classes are generally of a slow-medium pace with an emphasis on the importance of the breath with relaxation time at the end to leave you cleansed, calm and happy.

DYNAMIC HATHA: Take your practice to a new level with a more flowing style of hatha yoga. Dynamic yoga combines traditional yoga postures with fluid movement and key breathing techniques to deliver a powerful, flowing, meditative and energetic practice. In this way, dynamic yoga helps to build strength, improve flexibility, calm and focus the mind, and improve circulation.

IYENGAR: Iyengar Yoga classes emphasize precision and alignment, enabling correct positioning of the skeletal and organic body and the proper functioning of the breath.  Iyengar improves understanding and concentration. Iyengar Yoga offers a balance of dynamic and strengthening postures, passive and restorative ones, breathing and relaxation, working in a monthly cycle.

In Iyengar classes yoga postures are often held for longer periods to improve awareness and increase stamina. We use props regularly to help get a better understanding of the poses.

KI/HATHA YOGA: This Japanese style of Yoga is therapeutic and lively to align and support your body with the changes of season. It strengthens your body internally, corrects imbalances and weaknesses and increases energy.

PILATES: Floor-based, no-impact corrective bodywork, targeting the core stabilising muscles used for sitting, walking and moving. It builds a stronger, more flexible body without the bulk. Therapeutic and fun, it’s suitable for couch potatoes to Olympians and is especially good for assisting the healing of injuries. Tone your abs, stretch your hamstrings and help cure – or prevent – back injuries.

Our Yoga/Pilates blend classes are the perfect combination of Pilates conditioning and yogic asanas and breathwork for health and serenity.

ASHTANGA: A challenging and dynamic series of postures which develops a light, strong body and a calm mind. It is our most gymnastic yoga style which “stokes the fires within”. This flowing Yoga style helps to detoxify muscles and organs.

SUNRISE YOGA: These NEW energetic morning classes will put a spring in your step that lasts the whole day. Class style is Dynamic Hatha.

RESTORATIVE YOGA: Gentle, supported practices to nourish the central nervous system and reduce stress and its effects. Especially helpful during recovery from illness, childbirth or overwork.
